We can’t get too excited, though. Offsets are not a silver bullet to the climate crisis, but they are a valuable tool in reaching carbon neutrality – in other words: NET ZERO.

There are four main carbon offset projects, and these include:

Forest Projects

Humanity BREATHES through its forests. It is second only to oceans in terms of global carbon storage. To live sustainably, we must defend them with all our might.

Humanity is ravaging its woodlands. According to experts, the planet loses 10 million hectares of forests each year. Want a fuller picture of the damage? Ten million hectares is about the size of South Korea.

Every tree counts. Carbon is released into the atmosphere with each cut, burnt, and tarnished sapling. According to statistics, deforestation contributes to 25% of global emissions. And we've already seen its effects on our planet.

Methane Capture Projects

In many ways, methane is more dangerous than carbon dioxide. Methane contains twenty times more heat per mass unit. The biggest global methane contributors? Coal mines, landfills, and livestock farming – especially in the factory farming meat industry.

 

If done right, methane capturing projects can have a vastly positive impact on the environment.

So, how do they work? Stations are erected around landfills and coal mines. They take methane and break it down into less deadly substances such as carbon dioxide and water.

Innovation is also happening on farms. Anaerobic digesters expedite organic waste decomposition and convert methane gas into biogas – a cleaner alternative fuel.

Blue Carbon Projects

As the name says, blue carbon is carbon that is stored inside marine ecosystems such as seagrass, mangrove forests, and wetlands.

Marine wildlife securely stores carbon within its roots, stems, branches, and soil sediments.

There is potential for innovation here. Blue carbon projects are the next “big thing” in conservation. They can help counterbalance pollution and help us strike the NET ZERO target.
